The Old Oak is the last pub standing in a once thriving mining village in northern England, a gathering space for a community that has fallen on hard times. There is growing anger, resentment, and a lack of hope among the residents, but the pub and its proprietor TJ are a fond presence to their customers. When a group of Syrian refugees move into the floundering village, a decisive rift fueled by prejudices develops between the community and its newest inhabitants. The formation of an unexpected friendship between TJ and a young Syrian woman named Yara opens up new possibilities for the divided village in this deeply moving drama about loss, fear, and the difficulty of finding hope. Sinds de mijnen gesloten werden is er armoede en leegstand in Noord-Engeland. En al die lege huizen maken de regio ideaal om Syrische vluchtelingen te dumpen. Zo ook in County Durham, waar de jonge fotografe Yara terechtkomt. Daar krijgt ze te maken met veel anti-vluchtelingensentiment van de bewoners, maar sluit ze ook vriendschap met kroegbaas TJ. Samen besluiten ze in TJ’s kroeg The Old Oak gratis eten te serveren. Want TJ’s moeder wist al: ‘When you eat together, you stick together.’ Zoals in de meeste van Loach’s films (en zeker die geschreven door Paul Laverty) is meteen duidelijk bij wie je sympathie moet liggen. De kunst van vertellen en het oog voor detail zijn bij de oude meester echter zo groot, dat bij de kijker ieder cynisme al snel verdwijnt.
